Why the fitness industry is like the porn industry

Is it because they are both full of scantily clad women trying to take your money?  Is it because both of them get your heart racing?

Maybe, but the real reason the fitness and porn industry are alike is because they both sell false realities aka “BS”.

Tom, a 16-year-old virgin boy watches porn on the family computer.  He automatically assumes that normal sex is 45 minutes of hardcore sweaty pounding, moaning, and screaming.

Alexa, a 16-year-old girl watches chick flicks where the love scenes are magical with roses and butterflies.

One day Tom and Alexa get together and do the nasty.  It lasts all of 45 seconds.  They both ask what happened.  This was not at all like they expected.  Tom takes solace in “getting it in”.  Alexa feels…well disappointed and underwhelmed.

The fitness industry sells a different form of fake reality.  They sell products that promise “abs in 8 weeks”, “bench press increases of 100 lbs in 10 weeks”, ” go from fat to fitness model in 3 months”, “take this supplement and you will gain 20 lbs of muscle and lose 30 lbs of fat”.  You see where I am going here.

Like many others, I am guilty of looking to muscle magazines and website forums for fitness advise in my younger years.  The lore of trying one of the “pros” routines was too great to pass up.  The only problem was that “pro” was rather how you say “performance enhanced” and I was not.  All it got me was a ton of soreness and frustration.  To add a cherry on top, I ended up weaker than I was to begin with.

So how do the “uninitiated” prevent wasted time and actually get results?   You could kick ass in the gym all day to the break of dawn, but if you go home and down cookies and cake you will be as disappointed as Alexa was after her encounter with Tom.  On the flip side, you could eat healthy, but you don’t have a clue how to train your body.

The “secret” is to train smart and eat smarter.  Maximizing your quality time in the gym by using compound lifts such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses, rows, and overhead presses will get you much better results than broscience workouts of bicep curls and calf raises.  Doing smart forms of cardio such as HIIT is better than jogging which will eventually destroy your joints.  Eating a diet full of lean protein, veggies, and fruits will make you healthier and get you looking prettier.

I have trained in at least 10 gyms in my lifetime.  Without a doubt, 95% of the people I have seen working out did not have a clue about what they were doing.  Whether it be pride, shyness,  or lack of money those people never seeked the proper help to learn how to train and eat right.  When people need their sink fixed they call a plumber.  When people look to buy a home they call a real estate agent.  When people go to court they hire a lawyer.  Yet, when people start a fitness journey they make up some voodoo and pray that it works.

I write articles like this to inspire people to seek advice and learn how to do this fitness thing right.  This is why I offer such low-cost programming.  I’m not in this to get rich.  I do this to educate.  The best student is the one who learns from their teacher and applies that knowledge to their perosnal objectives.
